Sue Weaver Dunlap lives deep in the Southern Appalachian Mountains near Walland, Tennessee, where she and her husband live on and work a mountain cattle farm. Here, among the turkeys, deer, pets, and Angus cattle, she writes poetry, fiction, and memoir. Her poems have appeared in Appalachian Journal, Anthology of Appalachian Writers, Appalachian Heritage, and Southern Poetry Anthology, among other anthologies and journals. Her chapbook entitled The Story Tender was released by Finishing Line Press in 2014.

Age on the calendar, she said, it don’t matter much,
just marks time for folks not living. Years don’t count
none. People form our days, ease or pain don’t suffer us.

Breathe them in, she said, sort of mix them up inside,
see how they settle, glisten like sand on Brush Creek
or churn muddy after hard summer storms up river.

Don’t matter any, Mama said, that extra year on our skin.
Lines ebb and flow, lips purse and give. Girl, just hold folks,
knead them into place, and rock, rock as the leaves gather.


RESURRECTED MOUNTAIN SOUL

Cotton candy mist
strung
peak to peak,
whispers.

A lone crow
beckons
evening home.

Hounds wallow
in cool air
eager
for night.

The now
invades
precious moment, lost
forever.

Soon,
night envelops.

Mountain blood,
breathes,
laughs,
weeps.

Whispers memory.


FALL FROM GRACE

The task of silky Pet milk white gravy
fell to my mother, dark brown sausage gravy
to my dad. In their later years, white gravy fell away
from our kitchen like energy fell from Mama’s body. Familiar
territory became alien to her, as though she ended her cooking days
on purpose. Our landscape of Sunday dinner laden with roast beef,
okra, fried chicken, greens, potatoes, and cornbread fell away
as well. With this passing, her next of kin latched on to
objects: a rolling pin, iron pans, a snuff glass used
as a biscuit cutter. The red gravy bowl fell into
my hands. Well-used, deep in memory, my
gravy rests between white and brown.
